Like a bluebird…

He was a genius. He was a hero. He was always himself, and then again he was always somebody else. He was the reason people survived their darkest days, he was the reason they danced all night, he was just someone that mattered.

Life on earth has been existing for hundreds of millions of years. And yet we were lucky enough to live at the same time as David Bowie.

Now he is gone, but not without leaving one more treasure behind, not without even turning his departure in a piece of art. As I sit here writing those lines, trying to pull myself together, I look out of my window on a poster on the wall across the road. It is white with black star on it. They are everywhere in Berlin now. There is not one person in this city that does not think of him at least once a day. He wanted to make sure that everyone would notice he is gone.

He might have left silently, but he did not leave without a bang.

And not without saying Good Bye.

His last song Lazarus puts a frame around his death. It truly is his last work of art. And the message is not even hidden in a meta-level, it is there, bright and clear –

Death, the pain,

Look up here, I’m in heaven

I’ve got scars that can’t be seen

I’ve got drama, can’t be stolen

Everybody knows me now

his state, the drugs

Look up here, man, I’m in danger

I’ve got nothing left to lose

I’m so high it makes my brain whirl

Ain’t that just like me

he takes a look back on his life,

By the time I got to New York

I was living like a king

Then I used up all my money

I was looking for your ass

and he knows how this last journey is gonna end

This way or no way

You know, I’ll be free

Just like that bluebird

Now ain’t that just like me

but he is not scared

Oh I’ll be free

Just like that bluebird

Oh I’ll be free

Ain’t that just like me

You are right. That is exactly like you, David Bowie. I hope that you will proceed to be you, somewhere in another dimension where everything is better.
